REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

ASSESSMENT OF DEMAND – DETAILED BUSINESS CASE

The proposed Nullinga Dam site is located in far north Queensland on the Walsh River, within the Mareeba Shire Council and Barron Water Plan areas – approximately 55 kilometres south-west of Cairns and 24 kilometres south-south-west of Mareeba. (See map below).  The proposed Nullinga Dam has been proposed as a future water supply to serve growing urban demand in Cairns and to stimulate irrigated agriculture in the region, by supplementing existing supplies.

In 2017, Building Queensland completed the Nullinga Dam and Other Options Preliminary Business Case.  Since completing the preliminary business case, industry provided information that satisfied the triggers based on potential demand to progress to the next stage of development – the detailed business case stage.

Building Queensland has commenced the process of developing the detailed business case for Nullinga Dam.

Purpose of Request for Information

Building Queensland is leading the development of a Detailed Business Case (DBC) for the proposed Nullinga Dam in partnership with the project proponent, SunWater.

Building Queensland’s nominee, Marsden Jacob Associates, is managing both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the demand assessment.

Phase 1

The purpose of Phase 1 of this public Request for Information (RFI) is to:

  • inform interested persons of the nature of the water supply products expected to be available (whether medium or high reliability), indicative prices and the water supply terms;
  • seek a registration of interest from persons in the RFI process about their potential demand for water for agricultural purposes from the proposed Nullinga Dam;
  • obtain initial information from interested persons about the nature of their potential demand.

Phase 2

The purpose of Phase 2 is to establish any further information that may be required by respondents to assist to define their interest, and the nature of respondents’ interest in sufficient detail to inform the development of the DBC.
